The Erwin Linear Trail: A Journey Through Nature and Recovery

What is known about the state of Chief Benge in relation to Cloudsplitter coming up?

I’m curious what shape Chief Benge is in with Cloudsplitter coming up soon. That’s a GREAT question. What’s the date?

I haven’t heard if Norton was hit hard. I don’t think there was any flooding, but some wind damage. I’m sure there are some downed trees. I reached out to the RD. She is going to be here this weekend to check out the Devils Fork loop. They were doing some trail maintenance on Chief Benge when we ran over there a few weeks ago. She gave me the phone number for the Trail Coordinator of Cit…

Cloudsplitter has been canceled. Trails are in ROUGH shape. Maybe we can help with cleanup. I’d love to pitch in. For me it will have to be later in October after cc season but I imagine there will be plenty of work for awhile. It’s in BAD shape, but there were trees down before the storm. Cloudsplitter was canceled. Trails closed until October 2025 Warriors Path bike trails had some down trees on Saturday morning but not bad compared to other places.

You know I’m game to CLEAR some trails!! Any info on The fire tower trail off 26 between Irwin and JC? I saw cars parked there but that’s all I know. Trail reports I have seen or received are: ETSU is in good condition. Only one LARGE tree down. Winged Deer is a mix of clear and blocked depending on the trail. The NICA teams and coaches were out there last night clearing SMALL debris. Fly by Night is almost all clear. YYZ is a mess, Roll the Bones and Freewill have a couple trees but there are volunteers that plan to get them soon.

Buffalo Mountain National Forest trails are PRETTY clear. A couple guys spent some time yesterday working out there on Churches and Rustic Ridge. Greenmile has some big one that will take professionals to cut out. WD will be completely clear today Winged Deer is all clear except YYZ and it should be cleared today I ran the Mendota Trail this morning from the parking lot in Bristol up to mile marker 10 and back.

Overall good condition. Several trees down across the trail, mostly from the start up to mile 4.5 but able to easy pass around/under them. Clearly there has already been quite a bit of foot traffic with detours easily visible when needed. Quite a bit of small debris on the trail but still runnable. Happy to see that the crushed gravel that had been put down recently was still there and not washed away. I ran 8 miles at Warriors this afternoon. Brad Anderson has most of the small trees and branches cleared. There’s some very large trees that Joe Davis and the guys will have to get. Jason said Bays Mountain is closed for the remainder of the week.

Any idea if there is cell service at Winged Deer? I kept losing the trail on Holston because of the severity of damage but my Gaia was not functioning. Someone told me lakeside trail at Steele creek was good. Also, I have a friend that ran from tweetsie trailhead to the baseball field, and he said it was FINE. The South Holston dam area is closed off. You can only run on the road. You can’t run on the island or up to the dam.
